It is no secret in the internet marketing world that having a mobile-friendly website is essential, but when Google started to roll out mobile-first indexing, it was made official. However, the information about the concept has been pretty thin on the ground! Let’s take a look at what we know for sure about mobile-first indexing and what it means for your internet marketing strategy.
There is Not a Separate Index for Mobile Sites
One of the most common misconceptions that have been floating around since mobile-first indexing was first announced is that it would mean a whole new index just for mobile sites. However, Google has stepped in to clear that up confirming that there is no separate index for mobile-first. Instead, Google is primarily using the mobile version of a website for ranking and indexing instead of the desktop version. If you have a separate URL for mobile, then that URL is shown to mobile users while desktop users see the desktop URL. No matter which URL is shown, it will be the content from the mobile version that is indexed by Google.
Mobile-First Indexing is Mandatory
The roll-out of mobile-first indexing is happening slowly, but it is not something you can force for your website. It is simply a case of waiting for your turn! As of August 2019, Google started that website owners should prepare their websites for the change since although a date cannot be offered, all sites will eventually be moved over to mobile-first indexing. It has also been made clear that participation is mandatory, and there is no opting out. With this in mind, it is wise to build preparation for mobile-first indexing into your internet marketing strategy. If your website was published after July 1, 2019, then it will be on mobile-first indexing by default as all new sites are automatically added.
Steps to Make Websites Mobile Ready
There are several things that Google takes into consideration when it comes to deciding if a website is ready for mobile-first indexing or not. The decision will be based on:
- Parity of Text
- Video Content
- Structured Data
- Other Metadata
