It can take a bit of work to ensure that you are collecting and presenting the right data to connect with your audience. Before you can conduct research for what information you will present, you have to determine who will be seeing this information. While the term “content” might have a broader reach, the term “Infographics” has a more specific reach and the content within is designed to satisfy people specifically searching for that term. Of course, for an Infographic, you will have to define more than one term. To get started, think big to small, start with a broad topic and work down to specific terms. Make sure that you do backend research on the terms you have identified to ensure that engagement is still high.

3. Do A Broad Search For Data 

Now it’s time to start talking about what data you will put into your Infographic. When you are looking for information, start with broad search terms and keep an open mind. It’s likely that you’ll already have an idea of what information you want to include, but if you begin with an open mind you might find some valuable pieces of information that you weren’t aware of. Begin by gaining a broad understanding of the topic and define the specific parts that will convey the most value to your audience.

4. Use The Right Sources 

Fact-checking is easier than ever before, and social media is quick to punish people for citing incorrect data. Not only with this hurt your content, it can hurt your brand as well. When you have decided what information you will be including, do some additional research to ensure that it is accurate. Make sure that your data meets these three criteria:

  3. Validated

5. Up-To-Date Data 

Using accurate data is a must, but timeliness is just as important. Some research centers publish data a year or two behind, and that is okay to use, as long as it is the most up-to-date data in that field. Remember, if your content is outdated by the time you post it, then you have already lost all of its value.

6. Find Visual Data 

Remember, you are making an Infographic, not a slideshow presentation. The most impactful Infographics have less than 400 words total, so look for data that can be easily visualized. Not only will this help your content be consumed better, but it will also make a more impactful emotional connection.

7. Don’t Forget Storytelling 

Storytelling is an important part of Infographics, but it can be easily overlooked. Because this type of content is very data driven, many people overlook the need to craft the information into a concise storyline. Curating your information into a storyline format makes it easier to consume, helps your audience retain the information better, and is a more effective method to lead them toward a specific action. Before you make your Infographic, lay out all of your data and consider if your story makes sense, if not you may need to do some rearranging or you may need more data.

8. Choose A Headlining Fact 

When every other piece is put together, you need to decide on your opener. Your opener should be one piece of data that connects strongly to your overall message but has the most shock value. Whether positive or negative, it needs to be a piece of information that will cultivate curiosity in your audience. Sometimes this data point is obvious and sometimes it will take some research, but your opening line can be the difference in the success of your Infographic.
